The Freeport Yellowjackets’ varsity hockey squad evened its season record at 4-4 thanks to a convincing win over visiting Beaver on Thursday evening at the Belmont Complex in West Kittanning.
Connor Hoffman and David Gaspersic tallied four-point nights for Freeport and Alex Coleflesh added two goals and an assist as the Yellowjackets cruised to an easy victory over a clearly overmatched Bobcats team.
Hoffman opened the scoring with a power play goal at 3:14 of the first period to give Freeport an early 1-0 lead. It was an advantage that the Yellowjackets would not relniquish over the course of 51 strong minutes of play.
Hoffman scored again at 12:38 of the first and Gaspersic netted his first goal of the night at 14:29 to give Freeport a 3-0 lead at the first intermission.
The Yellowjackets dominated the first period of play and outshot the Bobcats by a wide margin, 14-2.
The second period was the most evenly contested frame in the contest and the Bobcats held their own against a continuous offensive attack by the Yellowjackets.
Coleflesh scored his first goal of the night at 13:09 of the second, set up by Hoffman and Gaspersic.
The Bobcats answered just 39 seconds later with their only goal of the night when John Dioguardi took a feed from Connor Hartman and beat Freeport goaltender Sean Fennell on a breakaway at 13:48.
It was the lone mistake in an otherwise spotless performance in net by Fennell. The Freeport netminder stopped 17 of 18 Beaver shots for a .944 save percentage in the Yellowjackets’ victory.
Karter Halleran added a goal and an assist for the Yellowjackets while Nico DiSanti and Jack Mason chipped in with two assists apiece.
The Yellowjackets return to action on Thursday, December 6 with a home game at the Belmont Complex against visiting Montour.
